Beer pong rules for your next game night
Beer pong is a target game: teams throw ping pong balls at an opposing rack of cups and remove cups when shots land. The rules vary by event. Agree on the rack, shooting order, re-racks, and endgame before the first shot; alcohol is not required.
A simple house format you can use
This is BP Scoreboard’s suggested casual format for dry-cup game nights, not a claim to universal or sanctioned tournament rules. It keeps the choices explicit so hosts can explain the game quickly.
- Make two teams. Choose two players per team for doubles, or play one against one with the same number of shots per turn.
- Set ten cups at each end. Arrange each rack in a triangle with rows of four, three, two, and one. Put the single front cup toward the other team.
- Choose who starts. Flip a coin. For this house format, give the starting team one shot; after that, each team takes two shots per turn.
- Count a made shot. Remove the cup the ball lands in. In this simple format every made shot counts as one cup, including a bounce. No bonus shots.
- Alternate turns. Do not block shots or move cups during a throw. Retrieve the balls and keep the next turn moving.
- Allow one re-rack. At the start of its turn, each team may request one rearrangement of the remaining target cups. Keep the rack centered and compact.
- Finish the game. In this starter format, the first team to clear the opposing rack wins. There is no redemption round. Reset all cups for the next game.
Choose the disputed rules before you play
If your group prefers a different version, change the starter format together. A visible rule sheet is more useful than arguing about what is “official” after a shot.

A sanctioned event can use a detailed rulebook that differs from a casual house game. Ask the organizer which version applies. Can you play beer pong without beer?
